President:  Angie Rubenstein

Here I am, back for a second term in 2008! We have many different activities planned, so keep checking your mail and email for updates!

I hope many of you are able to support the club by attending some of our functions. Some things don’t require the use of a horse. We may be calling some of you this year to help out on committees such as the Horse Show. This is a great way to get others involved, such as non-riding family members or anyone wanting to help or find out more about our club.

My husband Mike and I live south of Pine, Co, near the Colorado Trail and have 2 Missouri Fox Trotter mares.  After enjoying Quarter Horses for 28 years, yet not being able to ride them without pain due to back problems, my neighbor put me on a Fox Trotter in 2003. I couldn’t believe that I made it through the ride pain free (it actually made my back feel better) and shortly after, found my own Fox Trotter, Pearl.

Cappuccino’s Minnie Pearl (Pearl) is a lively, gray, 7 year old mare and our first Fox Trotter. We’ve had her about 4 years now and have learned a lot about the breed since then. We may forever be learning the gaits, but love the personalities and versatile qualities of the Missouri Fox Trotter.

I have competed successfully with Pearl in several NATRC (North American Trail Riding Conference) rides and our annual Fox Trotter horse show for the past three years. The Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol has been my passion since 1995. Pearl and I became a certified Mounted Patrol team for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in 2006.

Cappuccino’s Go Girl Go (GoGo) is a calmer, 5 year old palomino mare that has been with us for about 2 years. She did exceptionally well in 2007, placing second in the Model class at our annual show, became certified for our Mounted Patrol team and competed in several NATRC rides, acting like she’d done it for years!

We also have a 24 yr. old semi-retired Quarter Horse mare (Thriller) that’s  “done it all” and a 3 yr. old Curly/Draft/Mustang, Quarter Horse cross gelding, GI Joe. Joe will be a great Mounted Patrol, driving, and trail prospect…and is also hypoallergenic! It will interesting riding him with our Fox Trotter group!

I hope my knee surgery from December won’t keep me down too long as I plan on going to the June, Spring Show in Ava, Missouri this year!

Vice-President:  Teresa Kangas

"I grew up riding horses in my home state Michigan.  When  I  moved to Colorado and took up horses again, I discovered Fox Trotters at the National Western Stock Show. I just had to  check out the breed and found my first Fox Trotter.  What a discovery and what an opportunity to do even more in the great outdoors of Colorado.  Since then I’ve been having the time of my life.  My latest ventures include my trusty gaited companion “Dunn Delightful” or Dundee for short.  In the process I’ve met many fine horse people too.  I camp, enjoy riding weekends, have gone on several horse vacations both in Colorado and out-of-state, participated in competitive trail riding events and even brushed up on a thing or two with natural horsemanship.  A well-trained trail horse is a good trail horse indeed.

I’ve ridden with several riding groups and about anybody that wants to simply get out see the country or the local scenery, especially if they like to ride all day.  So I guess its probably no surprise that I ended up on the MSFTA trail ride committee.  As a committee, our mission is to get more of us together on the trail and at the campsites.  We have lots of big plans to have some serious fun – whether it’s an all weekend getaway or an easy going day ride.   So join us for the next get together and let me know if I can rope you in to participate.  That’s what its all about!"

Fox Trotters have been a part of my life for over 14 years.    Growing up in Wyoming, horses were always a part of life.  Trail riding the mountains of Colorado and being with fellow equine enthusiasts is what I love to do!   I have three Fox Trotters, which keep me very busy!

MSFTA is a great organization with many fine people and Fox Trotters.  Over the years I have worked on a lot of different committees in many different capacities.  Perhaps the most challenging project I have taken on is managing the Annual Show.  Again, in 2008 I will be managing the show.  This show is a success because of the  support of the members, the many volunteers and the performers.   I also serve as the Club's Communications Director!  (that includes the web page and ENews).

Treasurer:  Lori Florian

"Hi, I’m Lori Florian and serving my 2nd year on the Board, after being a member for about 4 years. My favorite thing to do is ride my horse, preferably with good friends along!! After finishing a day at my job as an Air Traffic Controller, my horses are my therapy! My husband, Rob, and I love to camp with our horses and trail ride.

I grew up on Thoroughbreds, show jumping, and wouldn't trade those experiences. But after moving to Colorado, my husband introduced me to gaited horses and mountain riding. All I could say on my first MFT was WOW! I had no idea a horse could be so smooth, the trails so incredible, or the views so spectacular! Since then, all I want to do is plan the next ride!

Thanks to joining the Club, we have met many new friends and discovered many great trails. As a Board member I hope to positively contribute to the Club and continue their mission to promote the Breed and bring us together for fun and riding. Hope to see you! Happy Trails!!"

Board Position #1:  (& Membership & Librarian): Susan Herzberg

"Didn't every girl grow up dreaming of horses?  I remember that we had just gotten a lovely, calm, Palomino mare to take care of for a short while.  I woke my sisters up before the crack of dawn the next morning, got them dressed warmly, and went down to see our new horse (more like a pardner).  I will never forget the thrill of being on her back, hair blowing in the breeze as we rode bareback all over the hard with our little legs sticking straight out, trying to hang on.  To say the least, mom was furious when she found out we weren't in our beds.  Growing up on the beaches of California, there was not much opportunity for me to get involved in horses.  The dream was always in the back of my mind.

I moved to Colorado almost eight years ago.  I bought by first Fox Trotting mare Reba, bred her a few years after that to  wonderful Charlie horse (Oldendorf) and now have a wonderful 5 year old.  I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved as a member of MSFTA these last few years, and getting to know so many of our members."

Board Position #2: Sue LeClair

Sue's life with horses started at a young age going to the race track with her father.  All of her siblings worked at the track at one time or another while in high school and college.  After college, Sue moved to Kansas City and worked an extra job job driving carriages in the Plaza.  With her tips, she was able to buy her first horse, a Fox Trotter.  Since then she has owned a few different breeds and tried jumping, dressage and competitive trail.  Her love now is trail riding in Colorado with her mare, Scarlett.  If she could only retire like her 29 year old Morgan!  Sue also serves on several committee's as a Litigation Manager with USAA.

Board Position West Slope:  Christy Burch

My name is Christy Burch, and I’m delighted to be the Western Slope board member for the MSFTA.  I’ve been a member of this great group for only 5 years now, but have enjoyed friends, horses and incredible camping/trail riding adventures in that short amount of time.

Having owned horses for 26 years, I am very fortunate to live at the base of the Ragged Mountain Wilderness in beautiful Western Colorado, and am currently writing a book called “Horseback Riding Trails of Western Colorado” – original, huh?

Of course, my Fox Trotter, Summer Cash, has literally grown up on many of these trails, and we have a lot more “research” to do this summer to complete the book.  If you’re on the Western Slope, give us a call, because we live to ride and ride to live!!
