New Mexico Ride - July 22, 23 & 24

The New Mexico "contingency" put on a great ride for those that ventured to the Point of Rock Ranch  east of Springer, New Mexico.  Trail Bosses Tom Germscheid and Dusty Davis put together a fun filled weekend experiencing  the Sante Fe Trail and the history of the area.  The dinner Friday night was BQ briskett with all of the fixin's!  That is some cooker that Dusty has!

The camp site was at the Point of Rocks Ranch. The Point of Rocks is a prominent landmark used as a navigational aid by travelers on the Santa Fe Trail.   There were over 25 riders many from the New Mexico area

On Sunday there was a private tour of the Dorsey Mansion.  The  Mansion, just off the Santa Fe Trail, is an extraordinary Victorian mansion built by the infamous U.S. Senator Stephen W. Dorsey in 1880. With 36 rooms and 10,000 square feet to roam, this magnificent log-and-masonry home features paintings from Paris, Dorsey's prized stuffed hunting trophies, and a variety of curiosities on display from his sporting lodge.  Once a focal point for social life in northern New Mexico and the gathering point for some of our country's most powerful men, the Dorsey Mansion sits alone on an expansive grasslands, a forlorn reminder of a vast empire long gone.

Although the weather was in the 90's, there was a breeze that seemed to keep the riders cool.  The ride on Saturday was across three  ranches, allowing the riders to take in the vastness of the territory.   That ride was approximately 20 miles, the distance that covered  wagons would cover in a good day in the 1800s.

The nights were cool, down in the 60s, which made the camping very enjoyable.
