Each year an outstanding member or members are chosen to be the recipient of the Member Excellence Award. This award honors an outstanding member of the Mountain States Fox Trotter Association.

The award is a symbol of true horsemanship. It represents sportsmanship qualities whether in the show ring or on the trail. The award recognizes those that have a partnership with the horse and is forever a student of the horse. The beneficiaries are respected by their peers and foster good will among the members of the Association.

In memory of Lex Ruhnke, the Mountain States Fox Trotter Association honors a member or members who have performed significant volunteer service for the organization.   These members make a difference in the organization in bringing about synergy among the members when it comes to various equine activities.

Lex Ruhnke was a founding member of the Colorado Fox Trotting Horse Association.  For those that met Lex through the Fox Trotter, she is remembered as one of the first met, always a smile and always willing to volunteer for the next event.  Lex Ruhnke died as a result of a ranch accident in 2005.
